UHC,DMA & Freedom of speech.

UHC: Universal health coverage has to be provided by the government and India cannot depend on Pvt sector to fulfill this moral obligation.

It is highly encouraging to know that India plans to spend 2.3% of its GDP on health sector in the twelfth FYP.The high level expert group of planning commission has chalked out a good plan to roll out UHC, its time for our executive to pull up their socks and deliver.

Along, with a massive spending in health sector, quality assurance mechanism should be built into the system.National accreditation board for hospital and health providers does make an effort in this regard but existence of multiple regulatory bodies and legislation makes things confusing.Hence, a requirement of single regulatory institution with clear mandate is the need of the hour.

Also, there is a need for a national level procurement agency. This body should be responsible for obtaining medicines at relatively lower cost and distributing to the required centres.Since, health is a state subject, centre has to build a consensus on this front.Nevertheless, the aim should be to provide availability, accessibility of medicines in all corners of India at an affordable price.

The recent earthquake and the subsequent tsunami warning tested the preparedness of the state.Since,2004 disaster India is equipped, with better warning systems and with setting up of specialized authority- Disaster Management Authority at the centre and the state level. However, only consistent maintenance of the disaster management rapid force, in terms of response and ability we can say" we are prepared".

West Bengal tops the news papers for all the wrong reasons ever since Mamata Banerjee has sworn in as the CM.Recently, is her authoritative act of censoring the text books, filtering the type of newspaper subscribed for the libraries, and furthermore, arresting the people who lampoon her, is paranoia..This is undemocratic in any sense of the word.Art 19(1) guarantees every citizen freedom is speech and expression.Ms Banerjee's act is sheer show of state power.
